What is Coaching?
Many definitions exist so it’s helpful to provide two key definitions provided by Dr Anthony M. Grant (Grant, 2001) the pre – eminent coaching psychologist who is the director of the coaching psychology unit at the University of Sydney, Australia and the Australian Psychological Society.
Dr. Grant: “Coaching is a collaborative solutions – focused, results – oriented systematic process in which the coach facilitates the enhancement of goal attainment, performance, self directed learning and personal growth of other individuals”
APS: “Coaching Psychologyis the application of the research, theory and practice of the behavioural science of psychology to the enhancement of life experience, work performance and personal growth of normal (i.e. non – clinical) populations”
Furthermore, the respected Harvard Business Review (2009) provides contextual understanding of the relationship and differences between consulting, coaching and therapy as outlined in the above chart.
