Frequently Asked Questions

What is personality?

Personality is a term that is resistant to definition and so broad in usage that no coherent simple statement can be made about it, e.g. different psychological theories such as type, trait, psychodynamic, behaviourism, humanism, social learning etc. all offer different perspectives.  Suffice to say some simple responses might variously include;

o   Personality affects the way we relate to the world and the people in it, how we work, who we love, and how other people see us.

o   What makes you distinctive

o   The core wiring, what you think about, what you feel.

o   The characteristic way, the systematic way that we interact with the world

o   How we see the world how we interpret

Why is personality important in securing your next role?

A large body of research shows that personality predicts occupational performance better than any other known factor. If you have access to a type of personality language / nomenclature you will be able to position yourself in the best light in interviews because unlike other candidates that don’t know themselves well, you will understand;

o   Clearly what your performance strengths and how to leverage them,

o   Clearly what your performance limitations are, how to manage them,

o   Furthermore, you will be better able to;

o   Ascertain what your core motives, values and workplace preferences,

o   Ask better questions to understand the culture and how well you will fit with the culture of your target organisations

o   Optimise your chances of being satisfied and engaged at work resulting in higher performance and increased chance of getting along and getting ahead in your career.

What are personality assessments designed to do?

o   The only personality assessments we recommend and utilise are Hogan assessments. Hogan personality assessments are designed to do three things: (1) evaluate your employability, (2) evaluate your job fit, and (3) provide a solid basis for leadership development and coaching.

o   Helps you understand yourself and helps you control yourself. To possess a high – level discretion in the face of adversity.

What makes personality so important?

o   Aristotle has said knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom. Knowing yourself will give you a sense of power over yourself a feeling of being independent.

o   A large body of research shows that personality predicts occupational performance better than any other known factor.

o   Without knowledge of who you are and a nomenclature to describe yourself you are without a starting point to initiate what – ever change you would like to make.

Have the assessments been proven to consistently and accurately predict performance?

o   Hogan has conducted in-depth validation studies to illustrate the validity of the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) – the “B right Side”, Hogan Development Survey (HDS) – “the dark side”, and Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI) – “the inside” in predicting job performance across occupations, job levels, and industry sectors around the world.

What is the “bright side”?

o   The bright side relates to a person’s strength and the factors that are going to help them manage their career and manage other people effectively. Public persona. Aspects that we manage to some extent – when we are presenting ourselves to the work at most socially effective. What strengths can we bring to bear. Capitalise on the natural skills and talent we have.

What is the “dark side”?

o  We all have a “dark side”.  The “dark side” is a set of characteristics that are not very attractive when they’re demonstrated. They can show up when we’re stressed, tired, bored, uncomfortable or insecure. When our guard is down. Our “derailers” are things that get in the way of our success. Our “dark side’ can also be seen as overused strengths, e.g. being bold or arrogant can be seen as adaptive and useful in some situations. In the shot term being bold or arrogant may be an effective coping strategy. However in the long run the ability to inspire and motivate others is reduced.

What is the “inside”?

o Directly related to success and failure something that people rarely reflect on.  It’s not what you don’t know that won’t hurt you. It’s what you do know that isn’t true that will hurt you. Values are the DNA of your cultural upbringing. People like other people that share their values. People are attracted to organisations that share their values. The culture of the organisation is defined by the people at the top.

What if I don’t like what you see on the “dark side” HDS Survey – can I really change my personality?

o   As challenging as it is to change a core element of personality that is revealed in the HDS, people in fact have the capacity to make concrete shifts in their nature. Recent research indicates that the adult personality is more malleable than once believed. How does one begin the process of transformation?

o Step One – acknowledge that change can be difficult. The brain craves safe, predictable scenarios, and the uncertainty of new behaviours can trigger feelings of discomfort and anxiety. So, change requires pushing back against those feelings, or simply accepting them, while recognising the challenge and the benefit of holding oneself accountable for one’s past and future.

o  Step Two – formulation of a plan of change—delineating goals and then dividing each goal into small, incremental, concrete steps. Achieving each step tends to provide motivation for pursuing the next one. With time, energy, support from a coach, mentor or significant other, and self-compassion, individuals can move toward a new future.

How knowing your dark side will help your career progression?

o We all have it. The dark side of personality is a set of characteristics that are not very attractive when they’re demonstrated. They show up when we’re stressed, uncomfortable, insecure or bored. The dark side of our personality are career derailers – the things that get in the way of our success at work – of getting along with others and getting ahead in our careers. If we can pin – point them, we are in a great position to be able create a plan to address them and in so doing increase effectiveness in a profound way.

How do I choose the right company to work for?

o  With completion of the MVPI in particular, you will be better able to;

o  Ascertain what your core motives, values and workplace preferences,

o  Ask better questions to understand the culture and how well you will fit with the culture of your target organisations

o  Optimise your chances of being satisfied and engaged at work resulting in higher performance and increased chance of getting along and getting ahead in your career.

How long will it take to complete my personality assessment?

o  There are approximately 200 items in each assessment.

o  On average, each assessment takes 15-20 minutes to complete.

o  The assessments are untimed.

How will I know that my personality profile remains confidential?

o Our reputation is important. We take confidentiality seriously. You will retain all rights and ownership to your personality reports. We will never share your profile with anyone without your express written permission to do so.
